6 Days Conquering the Shira Route
Experience the challenging and rewarding Umbwe Route on this 06 day Kilimanjaro trek, known for its steep ascents and stunning views. Starting from the dense rainforests at Umbwe Cave Camp, you’ll journey through diverse landscapes, including the iconic Barranco Wall, before summiting Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa. This trek is perfect for adventurers seeking a direct and scenic route with fewer crowds.
It typically takes around 3 hours to drive from Moshi to the starting point of the trail. We trek through the rainforest, along a meandering path that ascends a ridge. The lower parts of the trail may get muddy and slick so wearing gaiters and using trekking poles is advisable. After a bit walking, we arrive at the Shira Camp, where we will spend the night at Shira 2 Campsite.

We move east, from the Shira Plateau along a ridge passing by the junction leading to the peak of Kibo. Our path then turns southeast towards the Lava Tower, also known as the "Shark’s Tooth" (elevation 4650m/15,250ft). After reaching the tower, we reach a junction that heads towards the Arrow Glacier. Time taken: 3-4 hours
Distance: 4km
In the hours of the morning between midnight and 2 am, we press onward towards the summit nestled between the Rebmann and Ratzel glaciers. Our path leads us in a direction, navigating through scree as we make our way up to Stella Point on the edge of the crater. This stretch is undeniably the most physically demanding part of our journey. Upon reaching Stella Point, a brief pause allows us to witness a sunrise that will remain etched in our memories. Those who move swiftly may catch a glimpse of this sight from the summit itself.
As we proceed from Stella Point, snow may greet us along the hour-long climb to reach Uhuru Peak—standing at Mount Kilimanjaros highest point and Africa's continental apex!
Descending from the summit involves a route leading us down to Mweka Camp with a pit stop at Barafu for lunch. Gaiters and trekking poles might come in handy on this leg of gravel descent. Arriving at Mweka Camp marks our evening on this towering mountain as we savor a stay.
After enjoying breakfast, we will make our way down to the Mweka Park Gate, where you will receive your summit certificates. The terrain at altitudes may be damp and muddy, so it's advisable to use gaiters and trekking poles. Wearing shorts and t-shirts should suffice; it’s an idea to have rain gear and warmer clothing on hand.
After reaching the gate, continue for another hour to reach Mweka Village. A vehicle will be waiting for you at the village to take you back to your hotel in Moshi (a 30-minute drive). Once in Moshi, you can finally look forward to a shower, a delicious dinner, and some well-deserved celebrations!
